Client: Sir Oswald Stoll Chiswick War Memorial Homes
Contractor: Bugler Developments Ltd
Architect: Living Architects
Location: Feltham, Middlesex
Balconies: 22 Cassettes®
A new development providing housing for ex-Service personnel comprising 36 apartments and 22 balconies. The access to Staines Road was very limited meaning that the balconies could not be craned directly from the lorry bed, as is the norm. The building was built with a pre-cast slab meaning that anchors were bolted on rather than cast in.
The modular units were transported to site on pallets with pre-positioned lifting points located in the balcony deck. The balcony Cassettes® were offloaded with a telehandler and the palletised module approach enable each unit to be lifted directly from the back of the vehicle rather than people having to be on the lorry bed, and without specialist equipment, saving time and enhancing safety for on-site teams. The pre-cast slab meant that Sapphire’s post-fixed brackets were fixed, allowing the Glide-On™ system to still be used.
Step 1: The balconies for Staines Road were manufactured offsite in our Reading production facility while bolt-on anchor connections were installed.
Step 2: With the apartment building prepared, fully assembled balcony units were transported to site.
Step 3: Balconies were craned into position, with some even starting at the top of the three-storey building and working down. This process was made possible with our specially developed, and independently tested and certified counter-balance lifter which was connected to the crane.
Step 4: Once balconies had been glided into position, they were fixed in position. The deck surface was a continuous aluminium surface, with drainage holes, ready for the paving to be installed by the developers.
